BBC journalist John Humphrys is to become a father again at the age of 56, a colleague on the Today programme confirmed today.

His co-presenter, Sue MacGregor, made her comments on air this morning.

"Mr Humphrys is going to be a father, and we congratulate him. He says he got in before Tony Blair, but we're not sure about that," she joked on the BBC Radio 4 programme.

The journalist is 10 years older than the Prime Minister who, as referred to by MacGregor, confirmed last month he is to become a father again.

Humphrys and Valerie Sanderson, 40, a BBC News 24 presenter, are understood to be expecting the baby in the summer.

The presenter has two children - Catherine, 29, and 31-year-old Christopher - from his marriage to Edna Wilding. They divorced in 1991.

Mr Humphrys and Ms Sanderson, who have shielded their relationship from publicity, have been together for 13 years.
