More than 36,000 Christmas meals donated for Scotland's homeless in annual appeal

The campaign is hoping to beat last year's record of 75,755 donations

More than 36,000 pre-paid dinners have been donated to feed homeless people in Scotland on Christmas Eve Christmas Day.

The fourth annual fundraiser for Social Bite, which supports the homeless through cafes in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen, asked people to donate £5 to pay for a Christmas meal and somewhere to stay.

So far, 36,886 vouchers have been donated through Itison.

The campaign is hoping to beat last year's record of 75,755 donations.

Last week, more than 8,000 people slept rough in freezing conditions to raise money to help the charity tackle homelessness.

Participants in the Sleep in the Park event, which took place in Edinburgh on Saturday, pledged to raise at least £100 each. More than £3.6m of the £4m target has been raised so far.

The event, which was hosted by Rob Brydon, featured performances from Liam Gallagher, Deacon Blue, Amy Macdonald and Frightened Rabbit. John Cleese also read a bedtime story.
