Planes abort landings on way into Manchester airport due to severe winds

Planes were forced to abort their landings at Manchester Airport due to strong winds brought by Storm Deirdre.

Most of the UK was hit by an onslaught of severe weather over the weekend, with high winds, snow and heavy rain causing treacherous conditions.

Video taken at Manchester Airport showed planes struggling, with some aborting their landings and performing the go-around manoeuvre – a standard procedure in which the crew takes the plane around for another approach if the jet experiences a sudden blast of wind.

In 10 minutes of footage filmed by an aviation enthusiast using the name Aviation Up Close, planes from Portuguese airline TAP, arriving from Lisbon, and an Austrian jet from Vienna, both abort their approaches.

The aircraft had to battle crosswind gusts of up to 33 knots, the Manchester Evening News reported.

Aviation Up Close said both aircraft made a safe landing the second time around.

He added: “Winds were out of the south east, a direct crosswind for MAN & gusting over 30 knots, making for some bumpy approaches.

“Some great piloting in this video!”

UK weather: The latest Met Office forecast

The Met Office said the worst of the storm’s impact had passed by Saturday night, and the UK saw milder conditions on Sunday.

But police forces across the country were left to deal with numerous reports of collisions triggered by icy conditions, including multiple crashes were reported between junctions 15 and 17 of the M74 in southern Scotland.

Freezing rain was reported at Leeds Bradford Airport on Saturday, but a spokesperson said there had been no delays.

The Met Office warned melting snow and incoming rain due on Monday could create a risk of “localised flooding”.
