Two bombs left as trap to kill police
Dissident republicans are being blamed for two bombs left as a trap to kill police in Londonderry.
A pipe bomb was placed in a holdall on a walkway beside the River Foyle, close to council offices. A booby-trap bomb was attached to a nearby bicycle, timed to go off soon afterwards, as a follow-up explosion.
Search and rescue volunteers found the first device late on Thursday night. They looked inside the holdall, believing it had been left behind by someone who had jumped in the river. The Army made both bombs safe.
