The bodies of a man and a woman have been found at the bottom of cliffs at Beachy Head.

The man is believed to be a 58-year-old from Cardiff and the woman an 81-year-old, also from Cardiff - 220 miles from the scene of the deaths.

The pair are thought to have arrived at Beachy Head at around 8.30am yesterday in a black Vauxhall Vectra car that was found parked in the car park at the top of the cliffs.

Coastguards firstly spotted the body of the man at the foot of the cliffs at around 11.45.

A Sussex Police spokesman said that while arrangements were being made to recover it, the body of the woman was found a short distance away.

Detective Inspector Mark O'Brien said: "We are trying to establish the exact circumstances of these sad deaths and would like to speak to anyone who may have seen the couple on or near Beachy Head at any time on Wednesday morning.

"We think that they may have stayed locally the night before and again would like to hear from anyone who may have seen them."
