A midwife from Bournemouth has beaten off international competition from over 45,000 “beautiful people” to feature on a calendar of the world’s most eligible singles.
Yet she is a rare shining light for British pride, as in the selection process it emerged that “the least attractive country in the world is the United Kingdom”.
Picking the most successful 24 people based on submissions to the BeautifulPeople.com dating website, managing director Greg Hodge said the “stunning men and women” involved were classed as “‘Super Beautiful’ amongst our online community”.
Among the other winners were a nuclear engineer from the US Navy, a computer engineer from Norway and a banker from Bulgaria. They, along with all other members of the dating site, have only been approved to join after a registration process that involved being voted in by existing “beautiful people”.
Six men and women from the US made it onto the 2014 calendar, while there are two representatives each from Italy, Brazil and France.
Clare Travis-Punter, the only British person to make the cut, was more modest than most – saying she joined the site for “the challenge of whether I would be accepted or not”.
“It’s all been very exciting,” Ms Travis-Punter said. “I’ve been dating a number of members some of whom I've stayed in contact with but am still looking to meet someone I really have a connection with.”
Satine, a winner from LA, said that “moving in circles with such beautiful people is a real thrill”, while the US Navy’s James Lucas added: “Will my friends tease me about the calendar? Yes, but in a good way.”
While we can take some pride in Ms Travis-Punter’s appearance among the selected few for the calendar, overall British people struggle on the international beauty stage.
According to a spokeswoman for BeautifulPeople.com, “Britons in general are among the least successful applicants to the site, with less than 10 per cent gaining access to the exclusive community.”
The UK’s success rate ranks it the lowest in the world, with applicants from the most successful country – Norway – more than five times more likely to be accepted by their beautiful peers.
Overall, BeautifulPeople.com has over 750,000 members, chosen from more than seven million applicants worldwide.
