A woman has died and a man is in hospital after a speedboat capsized late at night in the River Thames.

Emergency services were called to the scene, near Wandsworth Bridge, when screams were heard coming from the river around 11.45pm on Tuesday.

A man was recovered from the water within minutes but crews searched for up to 20 minutes to find the woman, who was found unconscious.

The woman is believed to have been on a date with her boyfriend, the Evening Standard reports.

He had hired a speed boat to take her out on a late night cruise on the Thames when the boat capsized.

Both are believed to be aged in their 30s.

The large scale rescue operation included police and their Marine Support Unit, a police helicopter, the coastguard, London Fire Brigade and London Ambulance Service.

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said the man's condition was not thought to be life-threatening and the woman's death is not being treated as suspicious.

Police are attempting to inform her next-of-kin.
