Workers' travel woes

Hundreds of workers have moved jobs to try to cut down on the stress of coping with the country's transport "chaos", a survey says today.

One in six people said they had thought about changing jobs last year because of problems travelling to work.

Some of those surveyed by the internet job site reed.co.uk said they were losing up to four hours a week because of transport delays. Reed said British businesses could be losing more than £5bn a year.

Public transport was blasted for being "diabolical", "dirty" and "cramped", while half of the 6,000 people polled said their journey to work was more stressful than four years ago. Home lives were also said to be suffering, with one in three workers admitting to having less time for his or her family and friends because of travel problems.

"In the last 12 months, hundreds have moved where they work to try to avoid transport chaos. Employers urgently need to work with planners and the Government to find new solutions," said Paul Rapacioli, director of reed.co.uk.
