WW2 bomb alert hits London airport

London City Airport was closed this for nearly two hours this afternoon after a suspected World War 2 bomb was found nearby.

It reopened shortly after 6pm.

Earlier, a statement on the airport's website (www.londoncityairport.com/) had announced: "London City Airport is still closed to inbound and outbound aircraft.

"This is a safety precaution taken by the airport due to an unexploded WW2 bomb being found at a site in East London."

Even after flights restarted, passengers were still being advised to check with airlines before travelling to the airport.

The BBC reported that the bomb was found on the site for the 2012 London Olympics at Stratford and that an air exclusion zone had been set up.

Only 24 hours earlier, commuters were delayed when another World War 2 bomb was found close to nearby Bromley-by-Bow station.
