LABOUR called last night for a public inquiry into a new immigration detention centre where more than 60 asylum- seekers are on hunger strike, writes Jason Bennetto.

Twelve of the detainees at Campsfield House, near Oxford, who have been without food for more than four days, are under medical supervision. They are protesting at their detention without trial or charge for periods of up to a year.

Graham Allen, home affairs spokesman for the Labour Party, said: 'Palpably, this Government's whole policy on the detention of asylum-seekers is not working satisfactorily - a change is long overdue.'
