Law Update: Loan lobbying

The Trainee Solicitors Group (TSG) was due to lobby MPs yesterday for financial help for its members, including 'soft' loans and increased discretionary grants. The group will tell MPs that the limited availability of discretionary awards for the obligatory legal practice course (LPC) forces more than 60 per cent of would-be solicitors to fund themselves - usually with loans. The TSG proposals include tax relief on either the interest element or the whole loan, as well as Government help to reduce loan interest rates to the level of inflation.

MPs were also being asked to consider the introduction of means-tested grants for the LPC, as well as increasing resources to local education authorities to allow more funding of discretionary grants.
