Major's peace hopes
The Prime Minister said there was hope for an end to 20 years of violence in Northern Ireland because the people wanted peace. Before discussing the deadlocked talks on devolved powers with Albert Reynolds, the Irish prime minister, John Major said an end to the Troubles was wanted by Catholics and Protestants.
