An Old Bailey judge acted outside his powers when he ordered a hospital to disclose to police the medical records of a man accused of murder, the High Court ruled.

Colin Brown was arrested in March after a fight in which he was alleged to have been involved. On 3 April, Judge Bathurst Norman granted the police an order under the 1984 Police and Criminal Evidence Act requiring the Royal London Hospital, east London, to disclose Brown's medical records to help investigations.
