A couple who beat their 11-year-old son with weapons including a slipper, whip and belt will not be prosecuted, the Crown Prosecution Service said yesterday. Officials decided not to act after the couple, a scientist and a trainee nurse in their forties, admitted actual bodily harm under a formal police caution.

The boy has been voluntarily placed in the care of Avon social services.
