The world champion, Garry Kasparov, has been quoted as describing the dollars 5m prize fund for the Belgrade match between Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky as the highest sum ever earned by 'two retired champions'.

Jezdimir Vasiljevic, the Serbian bank owner who is putting up the money, has reacted by offering Kasparov half a million dollars a game to play Fischer.
