A policeman's hand, severed in a machete attack when he went to search a house, was packed in frozen vegetables by people living near by. Surgeons at Mount Vernon Hospital, Northwood, north-west London, were last night trying to sew it back on.

Police praised neighbours who rushed from their homes to help Detective Sergeant Bob Window, 39, based at Edmonton, after the attack in Albany Close, Tottenham, north London. Later a number of arrests were made.
