<p><b>The claim that dropped a clanger</b></p> <p>The Defence Minister and MP for Grantham, Quentin Davies, who defected from the Conservatives to Labour in 2007, submitted a receipt for £20,700 for combined work to the bell tower and the roof at his country home. Officials refunded £5,376. Ten days after MPs' claims made headlines in May this year, Mr Davies sent a note to the Fees Office saying he had never expected money for the bell tower. </p>
