Blair questioned again on cash for honours
Friday, 29 June 2007
Tony Blair was secretly questioned a third time by police over the "cash for honours" inquiry, casting a fresh cloud over his departure. The disclosure that Mr Blair was questioned as a suspect by Scotland Yard in the days leading up to his departure from No 10 was being seen as a clear sign the police investigation is still very much alive.
It came as he spent his first full day since leaving office at his home in the North-east, beginning work on his role as a Middle East envoy.
Mr Blair's spokesman said the former prime minister was working from Myrobella, the house which acts as his constituency base in Sedgefield, but refused to comment on the criminal investigation.
Mr Blair was the first serving prime minister to be questioned by police as part of a criminal investigation. He was questioned a second time when the police wanted to cross-check evidence against his staff. It now emerges he was questioned a third time after police were ordered by the Crown Prosecution Service to get more evidence.
