BNP membership list published on internet

By Ben Russell, Home Affairs Correspondent

The BNP has called for police to investigate after its membership list was posted on the internet.

The BNP leader Nick Griffin, said he complained to police after home addresses, phone numbers and emails of about 13,500 people, including some police officers, were released. He said the leak had an "essentially genuine" copy of the 2007 list.

He said some non-members were added "in an attempt to create further mischief".

In a statement, Mr Griffin said the leak breached a court order against former party employees and was an infringement of members' human rights. He said he had asked internet providers to remove the data. Mr Griffin said: "We'll be asking police to investigate. Having spent a lot of money to secure our members' privacy we are disappointed it's been breached. They know it's been in the hands of someone anti-BNP for a considerable time.
