House of Commons Speaker Lindsay Hoyle was forced to rebuke Boris Johnson on Wednesday during a fiery exchange with Labour leader Keir Starmer.
“I think I’ll make the decisions today” Mr Hoyle told the prime minister as Mr Johnson seemingly attempted to link Sir Keir to the IRA, describing him as “a leader of the opposition who supported an IRA-condoning politician who wanted to get out of Nato” – an apparent reference to former leader Jeremy Corbyn.
Mr Hoyle stepped in during the prime minister’s attack saying “I think there are questions being asked, we do need to try and answer the questions put to the prime minister, it would be helpful to those watching to know the answers.”
The prime minister appeared to try to continue, telling the Commons: “I think it would be helpful for all those who are watching to know...” before being interrupted again by the Speaker, who told him “I make the decisions”.
Mr Starmer went on to demand that Mr Johnson apologise for his comments.
