Children from Ysgol Garnant school near Betws colliery in Dyfed, one of the 10 pits earmarked for immediate closure, outside Westminster Abbey yesterday before taking part in the Coalfield Communities Campaign carol service alongside pupils from other mining areas. At another Campaign meeting, Arthur Scargill, president of the National Union of Mineworkers, called on Britain's 7 million trade unionists to stay away from work on 19 January in protest at the pits closure programme.
