Gay marriage 'completely nuts', says Tory MP

Conservative MP Peter Bone today called on the Church of England to block plans for same-sex weddings in a religious setting.

Fellow Tory MP Tony Baldry, who was representing the Church of England in the debate said they would make “detailed submissions” to the government on the subject.

In reponse to Mr Bone's comments the Home Office later defended the government’s pro-gay marriage stance, a spokeswoman said,

“If a couple love each other and want to commit to a life together, this government believes they should have the option of a civil marriage irrespective of their sexual orientation. We are working closely with all those who have an interest in the area to understand their views”.

Mr Bone, has found himself at odds with his own party on a number of occasions and has earned a reputation for being one of the most rebellious and active MPs since his election in 2005.

In contrast the Prime Minister, David Cameron, gave his backing to gay marriage in a speech at the Conservative party conference last year, saying,

“I don't support gay marriage in spite of being a Conservative. I support gay marriage because I am a Conservative”.

Government plans to legalise gay marriage are expected to be mentioned in the Queens Speech in May. However ministers will likely face opposition from a number of Conservative backbenchers.
