Jeremy Corbyn calls out Donald Trump for 'pandering to racism'

Jeremy Corbyn has launched a blistering attack on Donald Trump, using a major speech to accuse the US President of "pandering to racism".

The Labour leader urged Theresa May to get tough on the White House after Mr Trump made a "deeply disturbing" address to the UN earlier this month where he "threatened war" against North Korea.

He also called on the Prime Minister to stand up to Mr Trump over the US's decision to impose a 220 per cent tariff on new passenger jets built by Bombardier, one of Northern Ireland's biggest employers.

Speaking on the final day of Labour's annual conference, Mr Corbyn said: "We must be a candid friend to the United States, now more than ever.

"The values we share are not served by building walls, banning immigrants on the basis of religion, polluting the planet, or pandering to racism.

"And let me say frankly - the speech made by the US President to the United Nations last week was deeply disturbing.

"It threatened war and talked of tearing up international agreements.

"Devoid of concern for human rights or universal values, it was not the speech of a world leader.

"Our government has a responsibility. It cannot meekly go along with this dangerous course.

"If the special relationship means anything, it must mean that we can say to Washington - 'that way is the wrong way.'"

Mr Corbyn hit out at the US' "alarming" withdrawal from the Paris climate change agreement, in the wake of natural disasters in the Caribbean, South Asia, Texas and Mexico.

He also called for the President to "tone down the rhetoric" to end the warlike atmosphere with Pyongyang.
