The £231 million cost of the office block built for MPs is to be investigated by the National Audit Office.

The block, opposite Big Ben, cost more than £1 million for every MP to have an office there and Commons authorities have been accused of extravagance.

The NAO said the investigation was normal practice for such projects, particularly where there had been considerable public interest.

A report is expected next summer.
