MP's son hurt in street attack

The son of Cheltenham MP Nigel Jones was taken to hospital after being attacked in a late-night incident, police said today.

Sam Jones, 18, was one of two men assaulted in High Street, Cheltenham, on Friday night and taken to the town's general hospital with minor injuries.

The incident comes just weeks after the MP was seriously injured in an attack at his constituency office in which his assistant, school governor and local councillor Andrew Pennington, 39, died.

Inspector Keith Hodges, of Gloucestershire Police, said today the two menvictims were treated in hospital for minor injuries, but not detained.

He said two other men were arrested and taken to Cheltenham Police Station shortly after the incident.

They were later released after being cautioned for causing an affray, headded.

* Robert Ashman, 49, from Cheltenham, has been charged with murder andattempted murder following the alleged attack on the MP and Mr Pennington. He has been remanded in custody.
