She immediately warned her party to stop the in-fighting or face political oblivion. The 55-year-old MSP was confirmed in the top job after she was the only declared candidate when nominations for the post closed at noon yesterday.

As recriminations continue, amid revelations of a plot within the party to force Mr McLetchie out, the new leader warned that she would not tolerate any "disloyalty and disobedience".

"I think you may take it that matron's handbag will be in hyper-action," she told the party's 17 MSPs at Holyrood. "I'm not prepared to tolerate the kind of nonsense that has gone on."
