No charges in Iris Robinson case

Disgraced former MP Iris Robinson will not face charges over her role in helping her toyboy lover set up in business.

Northern Ireland's Public Prosecution Service said it would not be bringing a case against the wife of Stormont First Minister Peter Robinson.

Police had investigated the former Strangford MP's dealings with Kirk McCambley ahead of him securing a contract with Castlereagh Borough Council three years ago to run a cafe on the banks of the River Lagan in Belfast.

She had helped him secure two loans of £25,000 from wealthy developer friends of hers to enable him to raise the capital needed to operate the tender at the Lock Keeper's Inn.

Mrs Robinson was a member of the Castlereagh council when the contract was awarded.

The PPS said criminal charges would not be brought against Mrs Robinson over the matter.

"Following careful consideration of all the available evidence a decision has been taken not to prosecute this case," said a PPS spokeswoman.
