Salman Rushdie: Douglas Hogg, the Foreign Officer minister, defended his meeting with Salman Rushdie, the subject of Muslim death threats. Iran accused Britain of fuelling hostility between the two countries, but Mr Hogg said the meeting was a 'significant step in raising the profile of his continuing plight'.

MI6: The new Secret Intelligence Service headquarters at Vauxhall Cross, south-west London, had cost a total of pounds 236m according to latest estimates, Douglas Hurd, the Foreign Secretary, said.
