Former deputy prime minister John Prescott privately harboured doubts about the intelligence used to justify the invasion of Iraq in 2003, he disclosed today.

Giving evidence to the final session of the Iraq Inquiry before the summer, he said that many of the reports about Saddam Hussein's supposed weapons of mass destruction (WMD) appeared to be just "tittle tattle".

Lord Prescott also spoke of the intense pressure on the former attorney general Lord Goldsmith, saying that he was "not a very happy bunny" as he agonised over whether military action was legal.

And he revealed that he had complained to the cabinet secretary about Tony Blair's informal style of "sofa government", and that he had regarded the lack of formal cabinet discussion as "dangerous".

Lord Prescott told the inquiry he had been surprised at how insubstantial some of the reports on Iraqi WMD by the Joint Intelligence Committee - the UK's senior intelligence body - had been.

"I kept thinking to myself 'Is this intelligence?' It's basically what you have heard somewhere and what somebody else has told somebody. Presumably that's how intelligence is brought about. So I got the feeling it wasn't very substantial," he said.

"The conclusions were a little ahead, I think, of what the evidence we had. Perhaps that's the way it is. I just thought: 'Well this is the intelligence document, this is what you have. It seems robust but not enough to justify to that'.

"Certainly what they do in intelligence is a bit of tittle tattle here and a bit more information there.

"I didn't totally dismiss it, I didn't have any evidence to feel that they were wrong, but I just felt a little bit nervous about conclusions on Iraq's force that seemed to be (based on) limited intelligence."

Lord Prescott said Lord Goldsmith had found the process of coming to a decision on whether it was legal to invade Iraq without specific authorisation from the United Nations Security Council a difficult one.

"He was not a very happy bunny," he said.

"His demeanour was that he had a lot of weight on his shoulders having to give a decision. Everybody is coming up to him and saying 'hey Peter, is it legal?"'

He said Lord Goldsmith's concern may have reflected doubts that he could have defended his final advice that military action was lawful in court.

"Perhaps he wasn't happy that he could win that case in court. We couldn't wait until a court to find out. We had to make a decision," he said.

He admitted that ministers had been wrong to blame French president Jacques Chirac for the breakdown of negotiations in the Security Council to agree a resolution which would have authorised the use of force.

"I think the poor old French got blamed for a lot of it," he said.

"The French easily come to mind in the Brits' mind when we want to blame people. There is a lot of history for that."

Lord Prescott acknowledged that he had played a central role in the Government, meeting Mr Blair privately two or three times a week to discuss issues like Iraq.

"I was on the sofa all the time," he joked.

Nevertheless he said that in the early days of the Labour Government he had complained to the cabinet secretary Sir Robin (now Lord) Butler about the informal way business was done, only to be told that was how Mr Blair wanted it.

"I began to feel that 'sofa government' where key ministers came to an agreement with the prime minister and then sorted it out at cabinet knowing they had the prime minister on side was not a proper way to get into full discussion," he said.

"I thought that was a very dangerous process."

Despite his regular meetings with Mr Blair, he said that the former prime minister had never told him whether he had given George Bush an assurance that Britain would join the Americans if they did invade.

"He never did tell me if he had come to any agreement," he said.

He dismissed claims by those such as the former British ambassador Sir Christopher Meyer - "I call him 'red socks', I can't think of his name" - who suggested there was a secret deal between the two men.

He described how Mr Blair invited him to sit in on one of his video conferences with the US president.

"He did say to me 'Don't be worried about his language'. I don't think he meant the swearing but the style and aggression that would be involved. I must say listening to it I now know what he means," he said.

Lord Prescott ended his evidence with an impassioned defence of Mr Blair's "true leadership", brushing aside the "fashionable" criticism that had been made of the former premier during the inquiry.

"We have seen a few people gloss over their part in the history of what happened," he said.

Inquiry chairman Sir John Chilcot said they had yet to decide whether to hold a final round of hearings in the autumn when witnesses who have already given evidence could be recalled.

He said the inquiry team hoped to visit Iraq "to see for ourselves the consequences of UK involvement" before publishing its final report around the turn of the year.

Furthermore there was a journalist working for the Guardian covering the Bilderberg group. So I have more respect for the Guardian than the other so-called newspapers.

If they are not peddling their own agendas then I wonder why they would not have the patience nor the open mindedness to receive facts that have been investigated and research by other prominent journalists who are trying to get the information out.     I do not proclaim to be an expert. But I think I can safely say I know more about the Trilateral Commission, the Bilderberg group, the Federal Reserve and the deception they are creating and the agenda they have, more than you know yourself.     Do your read the newspaper? Is your opinion on world events influenced by what you read from journalists who write up articles? Where is your evidence there? If a Journalist writes up an article and makes a statement based on documents he has discovered and/or on interviews taken, are you going to say to me that is not EVIDENCE for you unless you left your house and drive up to the residence of the journalist demanding to see his evidence?

    Journalists who have spent 12 to 15 years researching on a subject by obtaining documents, taking interviews by experts in the field, photographing and videoing their research, feel it their duty to inform the world by what they have discovered by making a documentary or writing a book or using the internet.

    How many are aware that an oppressive police state control grid is being set up in the US? Twenty Thousand battle hardened regular army troops are now being deployed to patrol the streets of the United States. FEMA is building giant concentration camps in every region of the country. The Powers in government are ready for the riots well in advance, with these detention centers opening up around the country, with State Police training for riot control in the event of economic calamity and food riots.

    Why are they preparing for this? Why are we not doing the same thing in Europe? Why is this only happening in the US? There is a reason you know but you are not prepared to search for it.

    The Elite group are purposefully creating economic hardship which they know will create a revolt.     John Prescott seems to have forgotten to say that in the end, he did vote to go to war. How convenient to come and say now that he ?had doubts?. One would cry with laughter if the consequences of their obnoxious actions had not had such a tragic cost to many families around Britain that now mourn the loss of their loved young children in Iraq and Afghanistan. The more we hear about this enquiry the more obvious it seems that nothing will be done. All the Establishment is doing is putting a show that resembles a trial so that a real trial does indeed not take place. Once all the information available is collated, they will spend time and resources to obliterate and twist everything so they can dismiss formal accusations through legalistic technicalities. Yes, law has nothing to do with justice. It probably never has. And the longer they go with this unfortunate PR exercise, the more distant and dismissive the public opinion will be.     In common with, I suspect many others, I have concentrated on the fact that I believe that Blair lied with regard to the War. I confess I never even gave Prescott a second thought largely because I considered him an inconsequential buffoon but this article gives pause for thought. Prescott was a member of the Cabinet, allegedly he was the 2nd in charge of the country and should therefore have been influential in the decision made. As we read his comments, "is this intelligence?, it is tittle tattle, it wasn't very substantial, it seems robust but not enough to justify that". There are more such comments but these serve to make the point. Given his serious misgivings, and the fact that he admits to being in a uniquely influential position why did this man vote in favour in Cabinet AND in the vote in the House. Surely if and when we reach the stage of the consideration of criminal charges John Prescott should be included in any indictment, and convicted on his own words.

    Yes, but he wasn't being let be, WAS he? The overflights, surveillance and no-fly zone kept him pinned down for years. Embargoes also kept him from replenishing his weaponry and materiel supplies. So I'd call that pretty successful, wouldn't you? No need for invasion. As for the future, Saddam was bad, but he wasn't mad. For example, he took the weapons inspectors to the edge, but eventually cooperated with them. He was like a Mafia don who couldn't be seen to be weak in the face of external threats if he was to avoid the internal ones. But the reality was that he couldn't both rearm and survive and he was wily enough to know it.

    As long as we continue to vote men like him into power we will continue to get the governments we deserve. Whoever did so should hang their heads in shame.

    How can we have any confidence in a system of government that sees fit to promote him to the Upper House? How many think he will be lauded within the circles he used to routinely villify and villified in the circles he was once lauded?

    I agree with the sentiment but I'm not sure that's the case, although I might have to sit corrected.

    My recollection is that actually the SIS were fairly clear all the way along that there wasn't the evidence. It was the Joint Intelligence Committee that then took the reports and mangled them to arrive at what many think was a politicised version of events.

    Perhaps I misremember or misunderstand that you intended to include the JIC within the SIS ?

    I find Prescott's evidence very hard to believe and swallow as he backed the decision vehemently from start to finish making disparaging remarks and dismissing anybody who disagreed with his governments line even making the flippant remark when over 2 million people too to the streets of Britain to protest against any invasion "well 60 million people didn't did they" which says it all.

    On comes the flood of politicians who "doubted" the intelligence. More like, they knew it was wrong, but went along with it because it lined their pockets and gave them short term political capital. I seriously think it's fucked up that the seriousness of invading a country illegally is escaping these people, it just shows how isolated from the rest of the country and mood they are. This is how the public expousal from blame will carry on though, with each of the cowards expressing their sincere doubt on the data and regret on how they were fooled by the intelligence, and led astray by the Bush administration. These fuckpigs should go to court for treason. Scariest thing about them is they probably beleive their hands are clean of the blood of all the civilians and soldiers maimed and killed. Suppose it's easier to wash them and their consciences clean with a seat on a board of directors, a peerage and thousands of pounds an hour to prattle to a crowd of status quo shits.

    There's no point just admitting to doubts. If you have doubts about any evidence, it is standard practice to ask questions about the source - to not do so is a a dereliction of duty. If Prescott truly had doubts then why didn't he ask where the 45 min claim came from? so did he ask? was he told it had been lifted off a dodgy thesis the internet?

If he doubted the weapons intelligence then why did he not say so at the time rather than saying so years later to the media? He should have spent less time in Government brown nosing Blair for his own self serving reasons and said what he thought was right, even if this went against what "saint" Blair thought.

    It's sickening that this old fool, who never once dissented publicly, or in Cabinet, with the Blair line on Iraq and who voted for the war, can now sit straight-faced and say that he suspected what most of the UK's citizens suspected: that there was no case for war. You can put an ermine robe on a monkey, but it's still a monkey. He should be put into a Reliant Robin and made to drive round the country apologising to the bereaved families of servicemen and women killed in this appalling adventure.
