Since the first mainstream lap-dancing club opened 13 years ago, the number has risen to 300, doubling in the past four years

Plans to give greater powers to local authorities to determine whether lap-dancing clubs should be opened in their areas have been unveiled.

Theresa May, shadow minister for women, has announced that the Tories will give local authorities the power to decide whether a lap-dancing club is appropriate. "Councils are currently unable to block lap-dancing clubs opening even if they are overwhelmingly opposed by residents," Mrs May said.

A consultation with local councils would determine the most effective way of changing the current regulations, she said. But the Lap Dancing Association said the proposal was a "knee-jerk reaction" to misleading campaigns.
