Record rate of divorce
Couples are divorcing in record numbers, according to figures released by the Office of Population, Censuses and Surveys. In 1990, the rate of people divorcing reached 13 per 1,000 of population, with those aged 25-29 most likely to divorce. There were 153,000 divorces in 1990, an increase of 2 per cent on 1989, compared with just 24 in 1858 when records began.
