A Nigerian woman died in hospital yesterday after packets of drugs she was smuggling burst inside her stomach.

Surgeons who operated on Clara Ayemenre, 47, who travelled from Kano in Nigeria, found 84 packages of what was believed to be cocaine. Two had burst inside her.

The mother-of-six had collapsed shortly after arriving at Heathrow Airport on Sunday and was taken to Ashford Hospital in west London. A Customs spokesman said the empty packages supported the theory that she died from a massive overdose of drugs.
