In Memoriam Vladimir Mayakovsky

Hugh MacDiarmid (1892-1978) was the pseudonym of Christopher Murray Grieve, who was born in Langholm, Dumfriesshire. During his life he served in both World Wars, joined the Scottish Communist Party, but was later expelled, and formed the Scottish Nationalist Party in 1928. He was awarded a Civil List Pension for his services to Scottish literature, and received an honorary doctorate from Edinburgh University. This poem is from The Complete Poems Volume II, edited by Michael Grieve and WR Aitken and published by Carcanet at pounds 30.
