Kirkpatrick Dobie, a retired grain merchant, was born in Dumfries in 1908, where he has lived nearly all his life. He left school at 15 to become a bank apprentice and left eight years later to join the family business. This poem is from Selected Poems (Peterloo Poets, 1992) and appears in The Forward Book of Poetry at pounds 5.95.
