Rutger Kopland was born in 1934 in Holland and published his first collection of poems in 1966. His ninth collection appeared in 1989, the year in which he received his country's highest award for literary achievement, the P C Hooft Prize. This poem appears in A World Beyond Myself, translated by James Brockway and published by Enitharmon at pounds 7.95.
