John Burnside was born in Dunfermline in 1955 and at the age of 11 moved to England. His previous collections include Common Knowledge (Secker & Warburg, 1991) and Feast Days (Secker & Warburg, 1992). This poem is from his first collection The Hoop (Carcanet, 1988), and now appears in a new anthology Dream State The New Scottish Poets, edited by Daniel O'Rourke and published by Polygon at pounds 10.95.
