Brendan Kennelly was born in Co Kerry in 1936. His most recent collections include Cromwell (1983), and Selected Poems (1985). This poem first appeared in A Time for Voices: Selected Poems 1960-1990 (Bloodaxe, 1990). It is the first of a series of five poems taken from the new anthology The Penguin Book of Contemporary Irish Poetry edited by Peter Fallon & Derek Mahon priced pounds 7.99.
