Elizabeth Jennings was born in Lincolnshire in 1926. She has spent most of her life in Oxford. Her first book won a Somerset Maugham Award, the first of many distinctions and a CBE for services to poetry. Over the last 20 years Carcanet has published many of her books including Selected Poems, Collected Poems, Tributes, and Times and Seasons. This poem appears in Familiar Spirits published by Carcanet at pounds 6.95. All this week, The Daily Poem will feature the theme of autumn.
