Grace Nicholls was born in 1950 in Guyana. She moved to Britain in 1977, and works as a freelance writer in Sussex. Her publications include i is a long memoried woman (Karnac House), The Fat Black Woman's Poems (Virago), where this poem was originally published in 1984, and Lazy Thoughts of a Lazy Woman (Virago).
