John Updike was born in Pennsylvania in 1932. He is the author of 15 novels including the winner of the 1982 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, The Witches of Eastwick. He has published six collections of poetry, including Hoping for a Hoopoe, and Telephone Poles. This poem was originally from Facing Nature: Poems (Deutsch, 1985) and is in his latest collection John Updike Collected Poems 1953-1993 (Hamish Hamilton) at pounds 20 Copyright c. John Updike 1993.
