The 'Independent'

Michael Heseltine, President of the Board of Trade said he was inviting all interested parties to comment by 3 March on whether he should give consent to a takeover of the Independent and Independent on Sunday, without an inquiry by the Monopolies and Mergers Commission. The consortium of Mirror Group Newspapers, the Espresso Group, and Promotora de Informaciones, in agreement with three directors of Newspaper Publishing has asked for the consent to be granted under a section of the Fair Trading Act which allows a paper to be transferred if it is not economic and where the case is urgent.
