A man was killed early yesterday morning when the car in which he was travelling crashed and landed on its roof in a swimming pool.

Ashley Brixey, 20, was in the front passenger seat of a car which struck a low wall before flipping into the air and landing upside down in a private pool in a Wiltshire village.

Mr Brixey, a builder, was pulled from the water by paramedics, but they were unable to resuscitate him.

The accident happened in Limpley Stoke, on the Wiltshire county border.

A spokesman for Wiltshire Police said: "A single vehicle collision occurred at 12.50am on the A36 road involving a blue Renault Clio.

"The driver appears to have lost control of the vehicle while negotiating a left-hand bend. The car collided with a low wall and landed upside down in a swimming pool.

"It appears the passenger died in the pool, or at least, when ambulance staff pulled him from the water, they could not revive him."

The spokesman said that, until the findings of a post- mortem examination were known, it was too soon to say whether Mr Brixey had drowned or died from injuries suffered in the crash.

"The pool was private and part of an address in Waterhouse Lane. A full investigation has been launched by the Westbury traffic department," said the spokesman.

The driver, a 24-year-old man, was being questioned by police last night.
