The driver of a car which killed a child has been found dead in a quarry. Three-year-old Adam Mullan died in hospital after being struck by a car which mounted the pavement in the village of Donemana in Co Tyrone on Sunday.

The 22-year-old man who drove the car was later found dead in a quarry near the village. It is believed he may have taken his own life.

The boy and his mother, who had been visiting relatives, were struck by a white Peugeot car shortly after 3pm as they walked on a footpath near Allen Park. The pair were taken to Altnagelvin Hospital in Londonderry where the child later died.

His mother, aged 33, from Strabane, is being treated in hospital for serious, but not life-threatening, head injuries.

Meanwhile, a man was treated in hospital last night after being injured in a hit-and-run incident in Londonderry. He was walking along the Strand Road close to its junction with Patrick Street in the early hours of this morning when he was struck by a white Ford Fiesta.
