Police investigating an assault on a five-month-old boy are questioning his 25-year-old father for murder after the child died this afternoon.

Police investigating an assault on a five-month-old boy are questioning his 25-year-old father for murder after the child died this afternoon.

The man, who has still not been named, is being held by Northumbria Police in connection with the assault which took placed on a station on Newcastle's Metro system on Sunday.

Police had arrested three youths along with the child's father but all thre were released on bail last night.

The child was discovered in a blue pram by police officers on Sunday afternoon at Manors Metro station on the edge of Newcastle city centre.

A police spokesman said the man was still being questioned but refused to confirm or deny his relationship with the child. However it is understood the man is the father.

He has been in custody since Sunday and Newcastle magistrates granted detectives an extra 36 hours to question him today.

The Metro station was still closed today while forensic scientists examined the scene.
