A police officer investigating reports of a vehicle acting suspiciously died after being struck in a hit-and-run incident.

An RUC spokesman said the un-named officer was one of several attending a call in Andersonstown Park West, west Belfast.

While they were in the area, they were told a suspicious vehicle was travelling their way.

The spokesman said the officer was then struck by the car on Upper Kennedy Way shortly before 1.30am.

He died later in hospital.

The car, which police believe was not stolen, was later found abandoned in Glenalina Road in the Ballymurphy area. A number of people were arrested.
