A man accused of killing a teenager whose body parts were discovered 60 miles apart in what became known as the "limbs in the loch" case went on trial for murder yesterday.

William Beggs, 37, pleaded not guilty to killing 18-year-old Barry Wallace, from Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, in December 1999. He is alleged to have handcuffed the teenager and committed a series of physical and sexual assaults before murdering him and dismembering the body.

The High Court in Edinburgh was told Mr Beggs is alleged to have disposed of the remains in Loch Lomond and 60 miles away in the sea off Troon, Ayrshire.

The murder trial, which is expected to last a month, continues today.
