Police launched a murder investigation after a 16-year-old girl died today following an attack in a park.

Carol Sanderson and a male friend in his early 20s were attacked in Crystal Palace Park, south-east London, at about 9.30pm on April 19, a Scotland Yard spokesman said.

Police would not discuss the nature of her injuries.

They are trying to trace a group of youths who were seen in the park before the attack.

The couple were discovered near the ruins of the old Crystal Palace and taken to a south London hospital where Ms Sanderson died today.

The man, who has not been named, has been discharged from hospital.

The police spokesman said: "Anyone who was in the vicinity between 8.30pm and 9.30pm, and who may have seen a group of youths, leaving the park, or who may have seen anything suspicious are asked to contact police."

A post mortem examination will take place.
