A policeman is recoevering from burns after a Welsh police station was fire bombed in the early hours of this morning.

The officer, from Bettws police station in Newport, South Wales, was injured when a bomb was thrown while he was outisde the station.

He was taken to Morriston Hospital in Swansea and is being treated for minor burns.

The officer is expected to be released today.

Chief Inspector Ray Wise, of Gwent Police, said: "This appears to be a pre-planned attack on a police officer who is extremely lucky that his injuries are not more serious.

"This is a cowardly attack and I am sure the community of Bettws will be revolted by it. We need their help to detect this offence.

"It is a tribute to the officer that his concerns relate to resuming his duties in Bettws, where he enjoys his work."
