Winehouse to lead women in song at Glastonbury Festival

By Terri Judd

The line-up for Glastonbury was announced last night, confirming that the granddaddy of festivals can still pull in the star acts.

Almost two months after 137,500 tickets sold out in a record 90 minutes without a single officially confirmed act, festival goers found out what they paid their £140 for.

The line-up this year once again failed to disappoint with the traditional combination of long standing stars and newcomers.

The Arctic Monkeys are said to be headlining on the famous Pyramid Stage on Friday 22 June, preceded by a line up believed to include Kasabian, The Fratellis and Amy Winehouse.

The Killers are believed to be taking centre stage on the Saturday with The Kooks, Paul Weller, Paolo Nutini and Lily Allen all performing before them.

Dame Shirley Bassey, 70, will be "fulfilling a lifelong ambition" to perform on the Pyramid stage on Sunday. The Who are said to be headlining with the Kaiser Chiefs and the Manic Street Preachers are all expected on that day. There were also rumours that Smokey Robinson would provide a blast from the past.

While rumours have abounded for months as to who will be performing at the festival, those lucky enough to have secured a ticket will be able to rest easier now that the full line-up has been announced.

There were unprecedented tight security controls this year, with people having to pre-register with the festival's website, submitting personal details and a photograph for the right to buy tickets.

The rapid sale left several hundred thousands without a ticket and disappointed. The festival's organiser, Michael Eavis, increased ticket allocation so that more fans could attend the three-day event, which takes place at the end of June in Somerset.

Mr Eavis said: 'It's the fastest time we have ever sold out. The system has worked really, really well and it's a first. Unfortunately there will be a lot of people that will be disappointed.'

The Icelandic singer Björk is said to be headlining the Other Stage on Friday with Iggy & the Stooges set for Saturday and the Chemical Brothers on Sunday. Babyshambles are also due to appear although Pete Doherty and his girlfriend, Kate Moss, were rumoured to have annoyed Mr Eavis by announcing they would be arriving by helicopter.

Acts due for the Jazzworld Stage were said to be Corinne Bailey Rae and Amy Winehouse again.

Among the other acts appearing will be Victoria Hart, the 18-year-old waitress plucked from obscurity to sing at George Clooney's party during the Cannes Film Festival who subsequently landed a £1.5m recording contract. She will appearing on the John Peel memorial stage for up-and-coming acts.

Music fans will be handed a wristband with the message: "We can stop climate change", as part of the I Count campaign which encourages people to think about "reducing their carbon footprint" and backed by Greenpeace, Oxfam and WaterAid.

The target is for 100,000 people to sign up to the campaign by the end of the 24 June weekend of music in Pilton, Somerset.
