Threatened pits 'can make profit'
Specialists commissioned by the National Union of Mineworkers said that all 10 of the pits under immediate threat could make a profit. The NUM president, Arthur Scargill, said they had proved that the mines were viable.
About 800 men left the industry last week - the most to have taken redundancy in one week since closures were announced in October.
